Kapil Dev feels that it is too early to include Shubman Gill in the list of great players.

Veteran India World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev feels it is too early to compare young Shubman Gill with Virat Kohli and other batting greats of Indian cricket. Shubman has been in tremendous form this year as he has scored centuries across all formats and has carried it forward in the current IPL season. The 23-year-old leads the Orange Cap tally with 851 runs in 16 matches at an impressive average of 60.79. He is only the second Indian after Kohli to score three IPL hundreds in a season.

Kapil, who won India the 1983 World Cup, said it would take one more season to make tall claims about Shubman.

“Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and now with the kind of batting he is showing, it seems Shubman Gill is following in his footsteps. But I would like to give him one more season (before making tall claims). He definitely has talent and potential but needs more maturity,” Kapil told ABP News.

The veteran all-rounder feels that it is too early to include Shubman in the list of greats.

He said, ‘If he plays one more season like this, then there is no doubt that he too can join the list of great players. But I wouldn’t want to take him to that league right now. Maybe he needs to be given another year. It’s too early (to say),” added the former Indian skipper.

In the last four innings, Gill missed out on a century against Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 as he was dismissed for 42 as Gujarat Titans lost the match.

Kapil said that when a batsman plays cricket at the top for two-three seasons, the opponents come up with a well-planned plan against him and that is where he gets tested.

“If you play this kind of cricket for about three seasons, maturity comes and your talent is also tested. By then the bowlers get to know your strengths and weaknesses. If Gill can deal with this then I can say he is a great player or can become a great player,” Kapil said.
