Four people, including an Israeli, were killed when a boat carrying tourists capsized in Italy’s Lake Maggiore due to strong winds, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
The ministry said the family of the 50-year-old man has been informed. He was not immediately publicly identified.
Italy’s firefighters said the boat capsized on Sunday after a sudden change of weather in Lisanza, at the southern end of the lake in the north of the country.
“The bodies of four people have been recovered,” Luca Cari, a spokesman for the fire department, said on Monday.
Lombardy region president Attilio Fontana said on Sunday that a “tornado” caused the 16-metre (52-foot) boat to capsize.
Italian media said about 20 survivors were rescued by boats or swam to shore.
According to reports, the boat was carrying Italian and foreign tourists, and it quickly sank.
Unconfirmed reports said that the boat was hired by a group to celebrate a birthday.
A video from firefighters showed a search and rescue helicopter hovering over the water, where chairs and other debris could be seen floating.
Lake Maggiore, located on the south side of the Alps, is Italy’s second largest lake and a popular tourist destination.
