It took a while for both the teams to get into any sort of momentum in the attack. Edwin Vanspall was shown the starting yellow card at the start of the match amid tough physical struggles. The first big chance of the game came to Jorge Ortiz in the 18th minute, but Debjit Majumdar was quick to close the space to make a brave save inside the penalty box. A header from a corner from debutant Anwar Ali went off target five minutes before the half-hour mark.

Gaur took more control of the ball in the first half and looked more likely to score the first goal of the night. Glenn Martins tested the goalkeeper from long distance after Ortiz hit a rebound into the side netting. Derrick Pereira’s men threw everything at Marina Machans, but their compact defense did not respond, which meant that both teams went into the halftime break on level terms.

The second half started with FCG insisting on the opener. Edu Bedia came close to scoring the Olympic goal with his corner kick hitting the post and staying out. The midfielder was later shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Nerijus Valskis. Vladimir Koman was dropped due to injury and was replaced by Germanpreet Singh. As the match reached the hour mark, it was one-way traffic with FCG dominated and creating more scoring chances than CFC.

Naveen Kumar was finally called into action after making a significant save from Mirlan Murzeev at the 75th minute mark. However, it took Jorge Ortiz a moment of magic to break the impasse. The forward found the back of the net with a sensational left footed strike from long distance, leaving the goalkeeper trapped. His goal ended up being the winner and gave Gaur three well-deserved points.

Chennaiyin FC will take on Hyderabad FC in their next match at the PJN Stadium on Thursday, while FC Goa take on NorthEast United at the Athletic Stadium on Friday.
