Top intelligence sources told CNN-News18 on Wednesday that Pakistan’s ISI is increasingly making efforts to control Sikh shrines in Pakistan and the management of Sikh affairs in India.

In January, the Pakistan government appointed an ISI officer as the CEO of the Project Management Unit. Sources said that he was assigned the task of looking after Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.

Sources said the ISI wanted a cult figure in “flesh and blood” to stoke the fires of Khalistani separatism in Punjab.

He said the Pakistani agency was building a “brand and cult” around Amritpal and was also controlling his social media campaign.

Officials say Amritpal Singh is promoting a fundamentalist form of Sikhism. He and his followers ransacked a Gurdwara in Jalandhar by bringing sofas and chairs kept in the Gurdwara Durbar Hall for senior citizens.

Opposition parties have targeted the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab for not registering a case against Amritpal and his 40-50 followers despite a written complaint by the gurudwara management.
