IRMS 2023: UPSC to Hold Separate Exam for Indian Railways From Next Year

The Ministry of Railways has announced that from 2023, recruitment for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) will be done through a specially designed exam. IRMS exam will be conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The Ministry took this decision in consultation with UPSC and Department of Personnel Training (DoPT). IRMSE will be a two tier exam consisting of a preliminary screening exam followed by a main written exam and interview.

Qualified candidates will have to appear in the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination in order to screen sufficient number of candidates for the second stage of the examination – IRMS Main Written Examination.

The IRMS (Mains) exam will consist of essay-type questions spread over four papers.

Part 1 consists of qualifying paper for 600 marks. This Part shall constitute Paper A for one of the languages ​​mentioned in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. Candidate will have the option to choose the language. Paper B will be English.

Part II will consist of two optional subjects of 250 marks each. Candidates can choose from Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Commerce & Accountancy. The syllabus of all optional papers will be same as that of Civil Services Examination.

Part 3 of the exam will consist of Personality Test for 100 marks. Thus, the total number of marks obtained is 1200.

Candidates will require a minimum educational qualification of a degree in Engineering, Commerce, or Chartered Accountancy from a “University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature” India or other educational institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be a University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.”

The age limit and number of attempts for different categories will be the same as in Civil Services Examination. The results will be prepared and declared by UPSC in the form of a single list of recommended candidates from the four subjects in order of merit.
