Irfan Pathan told me the importance of preparation and process: Deepak Hooda on India call-up for WI series

Deepak Hooda, who received his maiden India call-up for the ODI series against West Indies, opened up on how the Pathan brothers – Yusuf Pathan and Irfan Pathan – supported him during the difficult phase of his life.

Hooda, who had switched states and performed brilliantly for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well as the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Hooda is being touted as a potential finisher in the shorter formats and, for now, in the ODI squad. He was part of the Nidahas Trophy team in Sri Lanka four seasons ago, but did not get a game.

Hooda told The Indian Express, “People used to wonder and doubt very often, but Irfan bhai always gave me a line, Apna Time Aayega.”

“I gradually came closer to Irrfan bhai and Yusuf (Pathan) bhai. They taught me to be calm, they made me realize the power of peace. As a youth, it was natural to be restless and I was no exception. It was a hindrance. My game. At times, I tried too hard. Trying to overdo the things that weren’t needed,” Hooda said.

Hooda recalled how Irrfan taught him the importance of preparation and process, which helped him maintain a good work ethic.

“I remember Irfan bhai telling me about the importance of preparation and process. Doing the same thing over and over, without expecting anything from anyone. So, be it gym sessions, training on the nets and a strict diet.” Adhering to, I have always maintained a good work ethic. It paid off,” Hooda added.

“I saw the ups and downs and then everyone came to know what had happened in Baroda. I moved to another state last year. It was a new journey but Rajasthan welcomed me. All the hard work paid off. I didn’t have any answers initially. Wasn’t found. Why was I picked and why was I dropped. It was a challenging time. I wanted to know why I wasn’t selected. I got desperate, desperate to get re-elected and just wanted to be in the team ,” Hooda said.

“I would also like to thank Anil bhai, because Punjab Kings gave me a chance in two IPL seasons, the people there saw that I still have something. I always supported myself. I always believed that try your best. Try till your last breath.” Hooda said.
