Ireland’s Paul Stirling and Shane Getkett Test Positive for Kovid-19 Ahead of West Indies ODIs

Irish cricketers Paul Stirling and Shane Getkett have tested positive for Covid-19 and have embarked on a mandatory 10-day quarantine as the team prepares to face West Indies. The Ireland national team announced on Thursday that both tested positive and are in isolation in the United States, where three One Day Internationals (ODIs) were called off due to COVID-19 concerns.

The Irish team will leave for Jamaica on Friday from Florida to play a three-match ODI series at Sabina Park from January 8 followed by a T20I.

Isolated players are likely to rejoin the Irish lineup about 9 January if they return negative Covid-19 test results with George Dockrell after the isolation cleared on Thursday and Friday Approved to travel with the team.

Richard Holdsworth, Cricket Ireland’s director of high performance, said: “This is a challenging time for everyone, but players have responded very well to working in a managed environment over the past two weeks.”

“We have an expanded squad with us on this tour, so will be able to cope with these absences until there is no further outbreak.”

The Irish are working with Cricket West Indies on COVID-19 safety measures in Kingston.

Andrew Balbirnie and Andy McBrine, who were previously listed as close contacts of positive cases and isolated, are likely to join the squad in Jamaica after Sunday, provided they test a negative.

Harry Tector and Gareth Delany have completed the quarantine and will travel to Jamaica.

Ireland and the United States split two T20 Internationals to start the Irish tour.
