Ireland’s Amy Hunter became the youngest century in One Day Internationals by scoring an unbeaten 121 against Zimbabwe on her 16th birthday on Monday.

Hunter hit eight boundaries at No. 3 in his 127-ball knock and completed his century with a leg-side flick for four as Ireland finished their innings at 312-3 in Harare.

The youngest male batsman to score an ODI century was Shahid Afridi of Pakistan, who scored 102 against Sri Lanka in 1996 at the age of 16 years and 217 days.

India’s Mithali Raj broke the women’s record in 1999 by scoring an unbeaten 114 against Ireland at the age of 16 years and 205 days.

“It feels really cool – it’s a little surreal,” said the teenager from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

“When I was reaching my fifty, I didn’t know what to think. I just wanted to be there and get there.

“When I reached my century, I didn’t know what to do, whether to take off the helmet or put it on. It was incredible.”

Hunter made his international debut at the age of 15 against Scotland in May.

She is the fourth woman to score an ODI century for Ireland and the first since 2000.

His historic achievement has come notably after single-figure scores of 2, 1 and 4 in his last three ODI innings.

Ireland women were on the wrong end of teenage prodigy in 2018 when 17-year-old Amelia Kerr of New Zealand scored the highest score in women’s ODIs with an unbeaten 232.

Ireland have taken a 2-1 lead in the four-match ODI series with Zimbabwe.
