IRCTC Luggage Rules 2022: Indian Railways updates baggage fee

The railways have been the preferred mode of transport for many passengers due to the unlimited baggage allowed and have never charged anything extra on baggage. However, with the implementation of the new luggage rules issued by the Indian Railways, passengers will now either have to limit their baggage or be prepared to pay extra during air travel.

The Ministry of Railways, in its tweet on May 29, had advised people not to travel with extra baggage. “More baggage then half the fun of travel! Don’t travel by train with more luggage. In case of extra baggage, go to parcel office and book luggage,” read the tweet.

How much luggage is allowed to be carried for free?

As per the new guidelines, a sleeper class passenger can carry luggage up to 40 kg and will not have to pay extra. Similarly, passengers traveling in second class are allowed to carry luggage up to 35 kg. For carrying additional baggage up to 70-80 kg, passengers will now have to book their luggage and pay extra.

As per the new guidelines, any railway passenger found to be carrying extra and unbooked baggage will have to pay six times the cost of the baggage. For example, if a person is traveling 500 km with baggage exceeding 40 kg, the passenger has the option to book it in a luggage van by paying Rs 109. But if the passenger is caught with excess baggage during the journey, the passenger will have to do so. Pay a fine of Rs.654.

Luggage Size

The new guidelines suggest that the size of trunks, suitcases and boxes as personal belongings should be a maximum of 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. But if a passenger is traveling in AC 3 tier and AC chair car compartment, the maximum size of suitcase/trunk/box should not exceed 55 cms x 45 cms x 22.5 cms.
