Irani Cup: Sarfaraz Khan Ruled Out of After Finger Injury, Ishant Sharma Looks Out of Sorts

Last Update: February 26, 2023, 14:42 IST

Prolific Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan has sustained a left index finger injury at the Delhi Capitals camp and has been ruled out of the Irani Cup, in which he was to represent Rest of India.

Sarfaraz did not attend the warm-up match at Eden Gardens on Sunday. The Irani Cup will begin in a span of two days in Gwalior.

Due to the injury, Sarfaraz had a protective fiber cast on the finger and did not bat or field during the day.

However, he was helping his teammates with energy drinks.

Sarfaraz’s Mumbai teammate Prithvi Shaw was on his best during the warm-up match and produced some scintillating strokes around the park in the presence of mentor Sourav Ganguly and assistant coach Pravin Amre.

Shaw, however, left the field after the batting session and reached the airport to take a flight to Bengaluru. He has to report to NCA for a camp.

Ishant looking out of touch

Out of the Indian team and barely playing domestic cricket due to injury, veteran fast bowler Ishant Sharma looked poor during the warm-up match in which he bowled for both the teams.

Ishant, who played only one Ranji Trophy game this season and was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a side strain, looked a bit overweight.

In between deliveries he had a long chat with his former national and Kolkata Knight Riders teammate Ganguly.

The length of his run-up looked similar, but the movement before the load-up was missing, and it required him to make a lot of effort to put his whole body behind the delivery.

The pace and slippery nature of his deliveries were missing outside the surface.

He was easily negotiated by the batsmen. With a month left for the IPL, Ishant will need to work very hard as he is not match-ready at the moment.

The dangerous drop in speed is a matter of concern.

Among the lesser-known players, Abhishek Porel of Bengal looked impressive with some big shots.
