IPL Opener Sees Drop in TV Viewership; JioCinema Witnesses Record Numbers

The start of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League between holders Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings saw a sharp drop in television viewership even as digital viewership registered record-breaking opening day numbers.

Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the tournament, recorded a TVR of 7.29 for the first match between GT and CSK. This is the second lowest number in the last six seasons of the money-rich T20 franchise league tournament.

Last season’s rating of 5.57 is the lowest for the opener. Worryingly, this was a sharp drop from a solid 8.25 last season and 10.36 in the edition before.

IPL returns to home and away format after a break of three years due to COVID restrictions.

The Broadcast Audience Research Center’s numbers for the curtain raiser hit 22 percent. Yet another drop from the previous year’s 23.1 percent.

drop in engagement numbers

The number of engagements recorded for the GT vs CSK game, which the holders eventually won, stood at 33 per cent, the second lowest in the last six seasons.

This was slightly higher than the 30 percent opener of the previous edition, but still a significant drop from earlier editions.

The drop in TSV points to a lack of interest in interacting and engaging from the fans’ end, which could be a worrying sign.
