In a high-scoring thriller, Rinku Singh once again put up a tough fight for Kolkata Knight Riders but failed to take his team home in their chase of 236.

Ajinkya Rahane, Devon Conway and Shivam Dube scored impressive half-centuries as Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 49 runs at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. In a high-scoring thriller, Rinku Singh once again put up a tough fight for Kolkata Knight Riders but failed to steer his team to victory in their chase of 236. The hosts were restricted to 186/8 as Rinku remained unbeaten on 53.

Chennai Super Kings controlled the match for most of the time as Kolkata Knight Riders were largely on the backfoot in the chase with the required run rate under pressure.

Chasing the target, KKR lost their openers Sunil Narine (1) and Narayan Jagadishan (1) for just 1 run. There was immense pressure on Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana to wrap up the chase but CSK bowlers were disciplined with their line and length and bowled several dot balls to add to KKR’s misery.

Both of them shared a 45-run partnership for the third wicket but CSK once again scored runs quickly and put KKR on the backfoot by dismissing first Venkatesh and then Rana.

Jason Roy gave KKR a ray of hope by playing a blistering knock of 61 off just 26 balls. The English batsman hit 5 sixes and 5 fours as KKR chased him down the middle. He thrashed Chennai Super Kings before Mahesh Thikshana bowled him over with a yorker.

Andre Russell had an off day and was dismissed for just 9 runs, while David Wiese also scored just 1 run.

Rinku fought hard during his innings of 33 balls and his innings was studded with 3 fours and 4 sixes.

It was a clinical bowling performance from the CSK bowlers as Mahesh Thikshana and Tushar Deshpande picked up two wickets each. While Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, Akash Singh and Mathisha Pathirana shared one piece each.

Earlier, Conway, Dubey and Rahane hit quickfire half-centuries to take CSK to 235 for four after being asked to bat. Dube (50 off 21) and Rahane (71 not out off 29) kept the scoring rate going, putting on 85 off just 32 balls to keep CSK’s scoring rate high.

Rahane smashed the Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers left, right and center as he hit 6 fours and 5 sixes during his scintillating innings.

The CSK top-order cleaned up most of the KKR bowlers to pile up big scores.

Young leg-spinner Suyash Sharma (2/29 in 4 overs) was KKR’s only bright spot in the bowling department.
