IPL 2024: Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Was Stripped Of MI Captaincy

5-time champions Mumbai Indians decided to change the captain of the team and gave the leadership role to their new signing Hardik Pandya. This meant that Rohit Sharma, who was the captain for the IPL franchise for 7 years was suddenly stripped off the captaincy ahead of the IPL 2024 season. The question that was asked by all ‘Hitman’ fans was that what was the reason that the team came to this conclusion.

Reason Behind change of captaincy

Rohit Sharma’s dismal IPL form can be considered as the number one factor for his captaincy role being taken away from him. Rohit Sharma’s IPL form for the past seven years has not been impressive despite of the team’s success in the league.

In the past 7 seasons, Rohit Sharma has scored 400+ runs in a single campaign only once back in 2019.

While Mumbai won back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020, the following season saw a decline in the performance levels from the side. Mumbai finished rock bottom in the 2022 season which brought a new low for the team.

Newly appointed captain Hardik Pandya has been a brilliant captain for his Gujarat Titans side in the past two seasons with the 30-year-old winning the title in Gujarat’s maiden season in the league. Gujarat also went on to the finals last season but missed out on their 2nd title, losing to MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.
