Kolkata Knight Riders made a brilliant comeback in the slog overs to stop Sunrisers Hyderabad from chasing down 172 on Thursday night. With this, the former champions have kept alive their slim chances of qualifying for the playoffs, even if they remain in the bottom half of the IPL 2023 standings so far.

With six overs remaining in SRH’s innings, the contest looked all but dusty as the hosts needed only 48 off 36 with six wickets in hand. More importantly, skipper Aiden Markram and big hitter Heinrich Klaasen were well set and finding boundaries.

His 70-run stand had put SRH in a comfortable position.

And then Shardul Thakur, with his golden hand, got Klaasen caught for 36 to give KKR the breakthrough. The hopes now rested on the shoulders of Markram, who scored 41 runs before walking off the podium.

After a few tight overs, SRH needed 9 runs from their last six balls and Varun Chakravarthy, who bowled an expensive first over, conceded three runs in that apart from picking up the wicket of Abdul Samad for 21.
