Lucknow Super Giants used the ‘Impact Player’ rule with just one ball remaining in their innings against Delhi Capitals

The ‘Impact Player’ rule has been introduced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 to add extra entertainment to the matches. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) became the first team to implement this, bringing in Tushar Deshpande in place of Ambati Rayudu in the season opener against Gujarat Titans on Friday night. Although CSK could not extract a positive result from this new rule, Lucknow Super Giants made the most of it in their first match of their campaign against Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

Lucknow used the ‘impact player’ rule with just one ball remaining in their innings. Ayush Badoni, who scored a blistering 7-ball 18, was dismissed by Chetan Sakaria and was immediately replaced by the LSG management for Krishnappa Gowtham, who came in as an impact player. The right-handed all-rounder caught Sakaria’s slower ball so well that he had no trouble launching it into the stands.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals also used the ‘Impact Player’ rule to bring in all-rounder Aman Khan in place of fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed. Before leaving the field, Khaleel took two wickets for 30 runs in his quota of four overs. Interestingly, the LSG vs DC encounter became the first game in which both sides used this rule before the end of the first innings. Prior to this match, CSK, GT, KKR and PBKS used their impact players in the second innings.

Earlier, Kyle Mayers announced his entry into the IPL with a brilliant 38-ball-73 to help Lucknow Super Giants post an impressive 193/6. He hit seven big sixes as he batted brilliantly on a pitch on which his skipper KL Rahul struggled while teammates Deepak Hooda (17), Marcus Stoinis (12) and Krunal Pandya (15 not out off 12) faced difficulty. A pitch which gave some help to the bowlers.

Nicholas Pooran scored 26 off 21 balls and Ayush Badoni hit two sixes in the final over to help Lucknow Super Giants post a decent total despite the Delhi Capitals bowlers pulling things back a bit.
