Jhulan Goswami heaps praise on Piyush Chawla, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma but Mohit Sharma’s return in IPL 2023 impresses her the most

Despite T20 cricket being widely regarded as a format for young players, the current season of the Indian Premier League has proved this stereotype wrong. Over the past season, rising young talent has often taken center stage, garnering attention and accolades on the grandest stage. However, the 2023 edition of the IPL has been marked by contrast as the spotlight has shifted towards the sensational comeback giants. Forgotten stars of IPL past like Mohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla are defying age and expectations to perform exceptionally well for their respective teams.

Ishant, who has been primarily known as a red-ball specialist in recent times, showcased his skills in the T20 format during this season of the Indian Premier League. In a crucial match against defending champions Gujarat Giants, he successfully defended 12 runs in the last over, helping his team Delhi Capitals win by five runs. Although he initially missed a few games, Ishant’s performances saw him included in Delhi’s XI midway through the season. Now, with the absence of Anrich Nortje, he has taken up the role of leading the pace attack for his team.

The 34-year-old Chawla made a sensational comeback this season and proved to everyone that he still has achieved. Rohit Sharma relies heavily on the experienced leggie to provide crucial breakthroughs in the middle order and he is doing it incredibly well. Chawla is leading the tally of wickets for MI this season, with 17 wickets under his kitty.

Mishra might not look the fittest on the field, but he still has the magic of googly and leg-spin balls. The fourth highest wicket-taker in IPL history doesn’t seem to be slowing down and is still working for his team with the ball. He has taken 6 wickets in the same number of matches this season. While we also saw him register his highest IPL score of 31 during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

While without any doubt Mohit Sharma has been the comeback story of the season. The 34-year-old was a net bowler for Gujarat Titans last season but Ashish Nehra and the management bought him in the IPL 2023 mini-auction. Gujarat didn’t include him in the XI for the first few matches, but he made his GT debut against the Punjab Kings, took two wickets, and there was no stopping him after that.

He is very calm and composed on his bowling as he is not showing any aggression on the field and is concentrating on bowling his disciplined line and length while blending in well with his slower bowlers. He has taken 12 wickets in 8 matches at an economy rate of 6.96 so far this season.

In a select media interaction, Jhulan Goswami, one of the greatest fast bowlers in Indian cricket history, responds to News18 Cricket a>xt’s query and gave his opinion on the experienced bowlers in the ongoing IPL season. He said that all the four bowlers have prepared well for the season and the results are there for all to see.

He said, ‘All the bowlers have bowled well. It is not fair if you name one because they are all quality bowlers. He has performed for India and won games for India whether it is ODI, T20I or Test cricket. No one underestimated his quality, the only concern was his injury and achievements. But this season he has prepared well, he played domestic cricket before joining the team,” JioCinema’s Bengal cricket expert Jhulan Goswami answered News18 CricketNext’s question.

Jhulan further praised the experienced bowlers and said that according to her the return of Mohit Sharma has been the most impressive.

“If you talk about Piyush Chawla, he did well for Gujarat and was playing in local tournaments as well. Mishra ji was doing well, he is a quality bowler, and he knows how to set up the batsman. Ishant Sharma is one of the quality bowlers India has ever produced, having played 100 Test matches for India. Everyone knows that someday he could be a big threat. The most impressive has been Mohit Sharma because nobody thought of him and when he came back and performed for GT it was amazing to see,” he concluded.
