IPL 2022: Why was Varun Chakraborty retained by former India wicketkeeper?

Varun Chakravarthy hasn’t lived up to the prestige despite being retained by KKR in the recent IPL auctions. An example might be the SRH clash where he conceded 45 runs in 3 overs! As soon as Aiden Markram took him, instead of outfoxing the batsman, Chakraborty kept feeding him small things that were nothing but cannon-fodder for South Africa. He gave away all the runs in one stroke and KKR lost the game with two overs to spare.

It is hard to imagine and people are now questioning whether KKR did the right thing to retain the Tamil Nadu spinner. He has had his worst performance this season, taking 4 wickets in six matches. “KKR’s bowling is a matter of concern now. Till now they were relying on the early wickets of Umesh Yadav but his death bowling has always been an issue. Varun Chakraborty can also be questioned if he is their retained player. He has to find some way to bowl. Narine is their only consistent bowler, bowling with economy of less than six,” said Parthiv Patel on Cricbuzz.

Earlier too, the spinner had revealed that he is working on a new variation. “It is bound to happen, people will have plans against me. Last year in the Indian leg, I took six to seven wickets in seven matches. Later, I took more wickets, so you can’t predict how many wickets you are going to get. Definitely add a new dimension to my game,” he said ahead of KKR’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday.

When asked about the new change, he said, “I am working on leg spin. I have been working on this for the last two years. I have bowled in a few matches and I have got a wicket out of that.
