Shami, who was a key player for Punjab Kings in the last few IPL seasons, was released by the franchise ahead of the big auction held last month. The veteran pacer was then signed by Gujarat Titans for Rs 6.5 crore, three times his base price of Rs 2 crore. Shami is likely to lead the bowling attack for GT along with Lockie Ferguson, Rashid Khan and others.
Reacting to Shami’s contract, GT bowling coach Ashish Nehra said the right-arm pacer is on par with Jasprit Bumrah in the T20 format. Speaking on ‘Backstage with Boria’, the former Indian pacer said that Shami may have a higher economy rate than Bumrah, but his strike rates are almost the same.

Gujarat Titans won the toss and elected to field against Lucknow Super Giants in their first IPL match played at the Wankhede Stadium here on Monday.
Gujarat Titans captain Hardak Pandya said that one of the reasons he decided to bowl first was the dew which can play a role in the match.
Hardik said at the toss, “This is the first game, we want to see how the wicket plays. Also, dew is a factor. One thing which is very clear is that we will give complete freedom to all the people, we will play ” freely and enjoy.”
Pandya said that the four foreign players he has picked for this match are Lockie Ferguson, Matthew Wade, Rashid Khan and David Miller.
Lucknow captain KL Rahul said that if he had won the toss, he too would have decided to bowl first.
Rahul said, “At Wankhede everyone wants to bowl first because dew plays a big role. The wicket stays the same throughout. We get to establish a legacy in a new franchise.
