IPL 2022: ‘I was a bit nervous but I controlled it’ – Gujarat Titans’ Yash Dayal

Gujarat Titans’ 24-year-old left-arm pacer Yash Dayal says the nervousness of playing his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) game on Thursday could have gotten him better, but he is glad that he could complete the task. Assigned them to the satisfaction of their captain Hardik Pandya. Dayal emerged as the new bowling sensation in the IPL, scoring 3/40 runs in his four overs as Rajasthan Royals were limited to 155/9, falling short in the chase by 37 runs. Titans had earlier made 192/4, largely thanks to captain Pandya’s unbeaten 87 off 52 balls and Abhinav Manohar’s 43 off 28 balls.

It was Gujarat’s fourth win of the IPL 2022 season and they moved up to the top of the points table with eight points.

“For the kind of background I come from, this is a big deal for me. It was a proud moment for me and my family. I was a little nervous but I got it under control. I loved the whole experience,” Dayal said in a video posted on the IPL website.

Dayal said he was extremely nervous when he came to bowl to Devdutt Padikkal, adding that he did not allow it to “compromise my bowling” at any stage of his first IPL match.

“I was very nervous, but still I didn’t compromise on my bowling. I knew I had to maintain my line and length and it worked for me. Hardik gave me full support. He had left it to me to bowl… where I wanted to bowl, what placement I wanted. He gave me complete freedom to try whatever I wanted to do with the ball,” Dayal said.

Abhinav Manohar, who shared a fruitful partnership with Pandya, and scored a quick 43 runs, said he gets a lot of confidence when he has a captain in the middle batting line-up.

“It feels good to bat with Hardik because he is also a batsman like me. He is a hard hitter of the ball. It gives me the confidence to go out and express myself. He is always telling me what to do, how to read the situation better. So when I am batting I get to learn a lot from him.

“It’s a great feeling, a dream for me because I’ve been watching him on TV, watching him bat…I’ve always been a big fan of him,” he said. And the way he strikes the ball.”

On his fight with RR spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who eventually dismissed him, Manohar said, “He has been a good friend of mine for the last 5-6 years. I knew that one day I would have to face him in the IPL and that day was today. It was nice to face him in the middle. I knew what he was trying to do against me and I played my shots, which worked in my favor.”
