IPL 2022: I always found it difficult to bowl against Virender Sehwag – Sunil Narine

Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Sunil Narine has said that in all the years of playing IPL for his franchise, he could not find a better cricketer than Virender Sehwag who could play his spin.

The West Indies mystery spinner, who will play his 150th match for KKR on Monday after completing 10 years with the franchise, when asked what he played the best though, said, “I would probably have to say Virender Sehwag. I always found it difficult because he was someone who always kept the game going, no matter what the team was in, kept batting the same way he did.”

Even though KKR have been placed mid-table in the IPL after three wins and as many losses, Narine has emerged as the most economical bowler in the season so far, with an economy of around five runs per over. He has also conceded the second-fewer boundaries for any bowler who has bowled at least 15 overs this season.

When asked how he ditched those who work hard in tournaments like IPL, the 33-year-old said that it is basically to keep things simple.

“It’s basically if I bowl a bad ball and get hit for a six, then obviously I have to bowl a better one. If I bowl a good ball and the batsman hits it for a six, I don’t try to read too much into it. I probably try to bowl the same ball because the batsmen don’t hit the same shots consistently, they try to do something else. I try to keep it as simple as possible.”

Asked about Sachin Tendulkar’s alleged request to broadcasters of the 2012 Champions League T20 tournament to provide footage of his bowling, Narine said it was good to know that the greatest batsman ever wanted to study his ball.

“It gives you a good feeling knowing that one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game wants to focus on you, but it shows that he is dedicated and wants to be at the top of his game and not be surprised when The game comes. I think for any sportsperson or youngster to come, always try to be the best and work on the fine details.”

The spinner said that having competed for KKR for 10 years gave him a sense of accomplishment, and expressed hope that given the love he has received in KKR, he will not have to play for any other franchise.

“Yes, I have always told Venky (Mysore, KKR CEO) that hopefully I will not play for any other franchise, I love being at KKR so hopefully I will start and finish here. I think it is a great achievement. You have not seen many foreign players staying with a franchise. Luckily, I am one of them and hopefully I can be with them in the future as well.”
