The BCCI is likely to hold a meeting with Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners next month to discuss alternative plans to conduct the lucrative league’s 2022 season amid the threat posed by Omicron in the country. India has been witnessing a rapid increase in the number of omicron cases recently and it is learned that the board is quite concerned about the health threats posed by COVID across the country in April/May, when IPL 2022 is scheduled.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the BCCI is likely to discuss all the scenarios with the franchise owners. However, the option of going back to the UAE is, apparently, off the drawing board. Notably, the original plan of the league, which is likely to begin in Chennai on April 2, is to hold the games as usual on home and away basis if there is no deterioration in the COVID situation in the country. But, if the situation does not permit it, alternate schemes will be activated by the board.

The organizers are exploring the idea of holding the entire tournament only in Mumbai and Pune or Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, Baroda and Rajkot cities if the COVID/Omicron situation worsens. And, the owners will be informed about the options as well as things to look forward to in the mega auction. Earlier, the BCCI had to put IPL 2021 on hold in May as several COVID-19 cases were reported inside the bio-bubble of the league. Later the second leg of the league was played in the United Arab Emirates.
