IPL 2022 auction: Old teams can retain four players; Three early elections likely for Lucknow, Ahmedabad

Indian Premier League (IPL) The eight existing franchises will be allowed to retain a maximum of four players in 2022. Whereas, the two new teams – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will be able to grab three players from the rest of the player pool before the auction, said a report.

However, the official date for IPL 2022 auction is yet to be announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

According to ESPNcricinfo, the IPL clarified these rules in an informal conversation with the franchises this week.

“The purse for the IPL 2022 auction is likely to be Rs 90 crore (approximately USD 12 million), it was Rs 85 crore in the 2021 auction. In the 2018 mega auction, teams had Rs 80 crore, of which they could spend a maximum of Rs 33 crore on retained players, then five players through retention and two right-to-match combinations. “Next year there will be no RTM card. Franchisees will be able to implement two different combinations while choosing the four players they want to retain: three Indians and one foreigner, or two Indians and two foreigners,” the report further read.

Retention will ultimately be the player’s choice, as he may decide to return to the auction pool or change the franchise, even if his current team wishes to retain him. It said that the deadline for retaining players could be till the end of November.
