IPL 2021: Shocker! Worst piece of third umpiring

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir was not happy with the third umpire during the Indian Premier League clash between KKR and KKR Punjab Kings were not given after a crucial catch by Rahul Tripathi, which could have changed the end result of the encounter

The KKR vs PBKS match went down to the wire as the KL Rahul-led side won by 5 wickets with 3 balls to spare. The result could have been different if the third umpire had accepted Rahul Tripathi’s catch as valid, which would have meant Rahul’s dismissal and Punjab needed 11 runs from 9 balls.

The controversial incident happened in the 19th over when KL Rahul hit a short delivery from Shivam Mavi towards the mid-wicket boundary. Rahul Tripathi dives ahead and runs to take the catch.

As the KKR players started celebrating, the on-field umpires passed the decision on to the third umpire, who made the decision after several replays.

Gambhir and former England spinner Graeme Swann criticized the third umpire after the match.

“Worst third umpiring performance I’ve ever seen,” Swann said on Star Sports’ post-match show.

Gambhir called the decision ‘shocking’.

“It was a shocker, it could end one’s campaign. He shouldn’t have seen Ripley more than once, it just looked outside. Had he got KL Rahul out, things would have been different. We can’t have such shocks in IPL.

KKR captain Eoin Morgan said that Tripathi’s catch seemed out of position.

“I thought in real time that Tripathi was caught out. But when you slow it down, the third umpire decides otherwise. Once he made his call, we got on with it,” Morgan said after the match.

After not getting out, KL Rahul scored a 55-ball 67 to guide PBKS to a 5 wicket win and 2 crucial points. With the win, they move up to 5th place with 10 points ahead of Mumbai Indians and will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in Sharjah next Sunday.
