iphone: Apple has added this iPhone to ‘vintage’ products list – Times of India

Every few months, Apple adds a product or two to its vintage or obsolete products list. The latest product to be added to the vintage list is the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 Pluswhich was launched in 2014, is now officially a vintage Apple product.

What are Vintage Apple products?

Apple classifies a product as a vintage as one that doesn’t get regular software updates. A standout feature about the iPhone, iPad or Mac is that it continues to get software updates for a minimum of five years. But a vintage product doesn’t stand to get any updates and Apple also doesn’t promise repairs or service to these products. On its support page, Apple explains, “Products are considered vintage when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 5 and less than 7 years ago.” This doesn’t mean that the device will stop working but it’s just that the shelf life is further refused when a user doesn’t get regular updates.
It was reported in December 2021 that Apple will put the iPhone 6 Plus on the vintage products list. Now, Apple has officially made the iPhone 6 Plus vintage, which means that the phone will not get regular software updates. Users who have the iPhone 6 Plus will not get the chance to download iOS 16, which is expected to be rolled out in 2022.
The iPhone 6 Plus was launched alongside iPhone 6 but the smaller variant is still not vintage. One of the reasons is that Apple had officially stopped selling the iPhone 6 Plus in 2016 — two years after its launch. However, the iPhone 6 was being sold till as late as 2018 in several countries. The iPhone 6 Plus was the first ‘big’ screen iPhone that was launched as till then Apple had not waded into the big screen phones space.
