Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed script highest 10th wicket partnership to win a Test

The first Test of the three-match series between Australia and Pakistan in 1994 became one of the most dramatic and exciting Test matches played between the two countries. For the bulk of the match, Australia were confident that they would register their first win in Pakistan in 35 years. However, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed performed brilliantly on the final day to help their team win by one wicket. The two stalwarts put on a vital 57-run partnership for the tenth wicket, which was the highest partnership for the last wicket to win a Test.

One of the greatest Test matches between Australia and Pakistan saw Australia opt to bat first and score 337 runs on the scoreboard. It was a scintillating batting performance by the visitors as Michael Bevan scored 82 while Steve Waugh played a scintillating knock of 73.

In reply, Pakistan did well but missed out on 41 runs. The team scored 256 runs on the back of 85 runs from opener Saeed Anwar. Australia came back with 232 in their third innings as Pakistan were given a daunting task of chasing 314 runs in the final innings to register victory.

The last innings saw a lot of action and drama as there was a constant change of pace between the two sides. The hosts got off to a good start with Anwar scoring 77 runs while Aamer Sohail also added 34 runs to the scoreboard. What happened after that was the collapse of Pakistan’s batting unit.

Australia was asking some tough questions to the opposition and the hosts did not have the answer. Salim Malik’s team soon fell to 258 for nine and after 35 years Australia’s historic victory seemed almost certain. However, Inzamam, who came to bat at number eight, made history on a 22-year-old pitch with the eleventh batsman Mushtaq.

The pair helped Pakistan come out of the dead by scoring 53 runs in just eight overs. In the end, Pakistan needed three runs, while Australia needed just one wicket. Shane Warne gave wicketkeeper Ian Healy a great opportunity to stump up and bring another twist in the game. However, Healy missed the stumping opportunity and the ball went for four byes. It was the end of the iconic match as Pakistan won the nail-biter by one wicket.
