International Women’s Day: Kerala gets first woman ambulance driver in government sector

The Kerala government on Tuesday appointed the first woman ambulance driver under its Emergency Medical Response Network on the occasion of International Women’s Day. State Health Minister Veena George handed over the keys of an ambulance under the Health Department’s Trauma Care Project- KANIV-108 (Kerala Ambulance Network for Injured Victims) to newly recruited driver Deepmol. Hailing from Kottayam district, she is a seasoned driver who has experience of driving a variety of vehicles during her long career spanning years.

The Minister said that more women would be appointed as ambulance drivers in different districts under KNIV-108. The government is contemplating to appoint aspiring women in every district and aims to ensure their participation in all sectors.

The aim is to help women break stereotypes and support them to step into the domain of their choice, the minister said. “Dipamol is an inspiration to all. I extend all my best wishes on this occasion,” said George.

Expressing happiness on being appointed as the first ambulance driver in the government sector, Deepmol said that it was a dream come true and thanked all those who helped make it a reality. The project named KANIV-108 (Kerala Ambulance Network for Injured Victims) is envisaged as a part of Trauma Care to save precious lives being wasted in road accidents.
