Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said on his Twitter that the company is adding auto-generated captions to videos on Instagram, a feature that has been “a long time coming.” Mosseri said in his post that captions for creators will be on by default. Earlier, Instagram users had to manually add captions to their videos using a time-consuming workaround.
The new feature, however, makes adding captions easy and intuitive. The Live Caption feature makes Instagram more accessible to hard of hearing and deaf users or anyone who prefers to watch videos with sound off. Captions will be available in select languages at launch and Instagram expects the quality of these captions to improve as more people use them and the AI learns over time. Instagram said it would expand the caption to more languages in the coming months.

Users will have the option to toggle Live Caption on or off. It is yet to be determined how Instant Caption will change people’s viewing habits or how it will help them boost Instagram engagement. However, a report from The Verge suggests that it’s possible that people who view Instagram videos with sound on may stay on the app longer instead of navigating away from the app after saving the video for later viewing. .

Users can turn on Live Caption on a specific post by clicking the three-dot menu and selecting the “Manage Captions” option. Here, they can turn on “captions” if they want new live captions to appear on their videos.

Instagram announced earlier this week that it was shutting down a separate IGTV app for users. Instagram said in its blog post that the company is getting rid of the standalone IGTV app as “part of its efforts to make video as simple and possible as possible to find and create videos.” The blog post also states that the video in the main app is a full-screen viewer with tap-to-mute, and the company is also working on a way to make video sharing and viewing easier.
