Rajkot: Taking out a leaf from the popular television serial ‘Balika Vadhu’, a progressive village in the country Raw Balika is working towards empowering the women of the village through Panchayat. The move aims to address the issues surrounding female teens – for girls, by girls, for girls!
Kunaria village, about 18 km from the district headquarter Bhuj, has a population of about 4,000 people.
Young women in the age group of 10 to 21 years of the village will contest the elections. This “Girls Only” council will run parallel to the adult village version, but will only address issues related to adolescent girls and women in the village.
There is a close contest in the elections to be held on Monday. The entire village has geared up in election mode with rallies, door-to-door campaigns and voter meetings. The result is to be declared on the same day.
Eight candidates were in the fray for the post of Sarpanch, out of which four have withdrawn their candidature. the competition is now Bharti Garva, 20, rubina node, 19, Trushali Suthar, 20, and Afsana SumrahThe 17-year-old, each of whom is busy explaining to 450 voters in the village why she should be voted as sarpanch.
Village sarpanch Suresh Changa said: “The selected girls will implement schemes that will address the issues of girls and women in the village. The idea is to prepare women leaders of the future.”
