Abhijit Banerjee’s comments come within 24 hours of Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay questioning the silence of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and Banerjee, who have roots in West Bengal, on the issue of the scam.

Amidst the ongoing controversy over the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal, Nobel laureate economist Abhijit Banerjee said that it is not a new phenomenon that incompetent teachers have entered the education system.

His comments came within 24 hours of Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Wednesday questioning the silence of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who has roots in West Bengal, and Banerjee on the issue of the scam.

“Disabled teachers are everywhere and always present. So in that sense it is not a new thing. Many of them taught me during my schooling days. Those teachers used to slap the students when asked. Disabled teachers all over the country They are everywhere. I come from a family of academic background, from my great-grandfather to all my teachers. There were shortcomings in the teaching profession. So, it is strange to see that this is a new phenomenon.” Banerjee told reporters.

However, the Nobel laureate refused to make any direct comment on the ongoing central agency’s probe into the scam.

“Since the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the matter, I am unable to comment on the matter. I don’t see any reason to comment on this matter. I personally do not debate such matters. I think it would be an irresponsible act on my part to give any kind of opinion in this matter.

On Tuesday, Justice Gangopadhyay said that two Nobel laureates make statements and give opinions on many issues.

“My curiosity is what is his observation on the teachers scam. It was a scam of such a huge magnitude. What do the Nobel laureates have to say?” he asked.

Speaking to reporters, Banerjee refused to make any comment on Amartya Sen’s recent comments that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s qualities to attain the prime minister’s chair were undeniable.

“I don’t find any reason to get into such a discussion,” he said.
