Weekly Covid-19 cases in India declined by 4% after registering a 7.5% spike last week, mainly due to a sharp drop in cases in several northeastern states.
India reported over 2.74 lakh cases during the week ended Sunday (August 2-8), a decline of 4.2% from the previous week, when the case count stood at 2.86 lakh. That week (July 26-August 1), fresh cases in the country rose for the first time in 12 weeks due to a 27% increase in Kerala and lower growth in some states in Karnataka and the north-east.
In the current week, Kerala’s cases showed signs of plateauing, with a marginal 1% increase over the previous week. In absolute numbers, the state reported over 1.41 lakh cases, its highest weekly count since the last week of May. Kerala accounts for over 51% of all new cases reported during the week.

Tamil Nadu, where the cases have been rising marginally for the last 10 days, registered a weekly increase of 5%, while Andhra Pradesh registered a growth of 1%. With this, except Telangana, all the southern states have registered an increase in infections this week or last.
Meanwhile, deaths fell to 3,540 during the week, the lowest weekly toll in the country since the beginning of April. This was a 7% drop from the previous week’s toll of 3,805.
The drop in weekly cases was mainly due to a sharp drop in fresh infections in the Northeast, which recorded a decline of 43% in Sikkim, 32% in Tripura, 26% in Arunachal Pradesh, 25% in Manipur and 22% in Mizoram. . In many of these states, cases were increasing till last week.
