India’s technological proficiency level rises, but overall efficiency falls: Coursera – Times of India

Bengaluru: CourseraIndia has slipped four places to be ranked 68th globally in overall skilling skills, the latest annual Global Skills Report of India has found. India ranks 19th in Asia. However, India’s technology proficiency level increased from 38% to 46%, with the country consolidating its position by six places. On the other hand, proficiency in Data Science has dropped from 38% in 2021 to 26% in 2022, leading to a drop of 12 ranks.
The report draws on data from 100 million learners in more than 100 countries who have used Coursera over the past year to develop a new skill. The report benchmarks three of the most in-demand skill sectors driving employment in the digital economy – business, technology and data science. The report revealed that Indian learners in southern states perform better than those in northern states in all three areas.

With strong proficiency in key technical skills such as cloud computing, theoretical computer science and web development, India is now ranked 56th globally as compared to 66th position last year. Cloud computing is India’s strongest technology prowess with 74% efficiency.
Learners in India are focusing on financial skills. According to the report, learners in India are indexed higher in skills such as investment management (1.3x), blockchain (1.3x) and risk management (1.2x). Over-indexing measures skills that are more popular with certain groups than Coursera.
West Bengal is at the forefront of Indian states in terms of skilling proficiency. West Bengal has been ranked as the number 1 state in three domains. The state showed the highest level of digital skills proficiency in the country, surpassing Karnataka (at No. 4 in Technology and No. 6 in Data Science). Learners in West Bengal achieved complete 100% proficiency in more than 10 skills in three domains namely leadership and management, human resources, cloud computing, computer programming, ML and data analysis.
“The industry report estimates that 28 million new technology jobs will be created in India by 2025.
