India’s T20 World Cup Squad Selection Updates: Chahal Misses Out; Pandya, Dube in as Allrounders – Report – News18

India’s squad selection for the T20 World Cup 2024 has invited unending predictions, debates and multiple media reports with vivid information. With the deadline to pick the group of 15 fast approaching, the selectors and the team management are likely to sit down and take a call on Tuesday when they meet in Ahmedabad.

Ahead of the much-awaited announcement, it has been learned that Yuzvendra Chahal might miss the flight again. The wrists-spinner is the highest wicket-taker for India in the shortest format and has been in red-hot form in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with 13 wickets in 6 games. Despite producing phenomenal results with the ball, the decision-makers aren’t too keen to have Chahal in the final 15.

As reported by the Indian Express, the trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi are likely to make the cut. Chahal is having an exceptional IPL season but could pay the price for not being a reliable fielder.

Minimum Three All-rounders

In order to have batting depth, India are likely to take at least three all-rounders in the 15, the report stated. Hardik Pandya to keep his spot even though his form with the bat and ball still remains a concern.

Shivam Dube is also expected to make the cut as a power hitter. Since Chennai Super Kings have seldom given him chances to showcase his bowling skills in the IPL 2024, there are apprehensions about considering him an all-rounder. But since India have limited options among batters who could bowl, Dube remains the frontrunner.  Since Pandya’s bowling hasn’t been impressive in the IPL 2024, the selectors shall have both.

Having Dube onboard means India will be taking only three pacers with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh in the 15.

Announcement likely on Tuesday

Earlier, CriketNext reported that the selection committee will meet in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to pick India’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

With the captain set to play the Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday evening, he is likely to join the meeting virtually in the afternoon. Coach Rahul Dravid will also be present but it’s not sure whether he would be flying to Ahmedabad or joining the meeting online like the captain.
