India’s fuel demand jumps in June – Times of India

New Delhi: Of India fuel demand June bounced back after falling to a nine-month low in the previous month as restrictions were eased to contain the spread of the pandemic, helping economic activity and mobility pick up.
Fuel consumption rose 1.5 per cent to 16.33 million tonnes in June from a year ago and 8 per cent in May 2021. Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has shown.
Petrol sales in June grew 5.6 per cent year-on-year to 2.4 million tonnes. This was up 21 per cent from the sales of 1.99 million tonnes in May.
Diesel – the most widely used fuel in the country – rose 12 per cent to 6.2 million tonnes from May, but was down 1.5 per cent from June 2020 and 18.8 per cent from June 2019.
This is the first monthly increase since March.
Fuel demand had returned to near-normal levels in March before the start of the second wave of Covid-19 infections, leading to the re-imposition of lockdowns in various states, which stalled mobility and stalled economic activity.
Consumption in May fell to its lowest since August last year amid the lockdown and restrictions in several states.
Fuel demand showed signs of revival after restrictions were eased in June and the economy picked up.
As COVID cases continue to decline and vaccinations are accelerating, state governments continue to reopen, although exceptions exist such as Maharashtra.
The then oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan said last month that India’s fuel demand would reach pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2021.
“We are confident that by the end of this calendar year we will be in a position to restore our original (pre-Covid) consumption behaviour,” Pradhan said.
Consumption of LPG, the only fuel that showed an increase even during the first lockdown due to free supply by the government to the poor, grew 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 2.26 million tonnes. This was up 26.3 per cent as compared to June 2019.
With airlines yet to resume full-scale operations due to worldwide travel restrictions, jet fuel sales at 2,58,000 tonnes were up 16.2 per cent year-on-year but down 61.7 per cent compared to June of 2019.
Sales of naphtha declined by about 3.1 per cent to 1.19 million tonnes, while sales of bitumen, used to build roads, declined 32 per cent to 5,09,000 tonnes. Fuel oil consumption increased by 1.9 percent to 5,33,000 tonnes.
