New Delhi: Amid widespread concern over pollution levels in the national capital, Delhi got the country’s first functional smog tower near a metro station. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav virtually inaugurated the Smog Tower at Anand Vihar on Tuesday.
A smog tower is a structure designed largely as an air purifier to reduce pollution particles in the surrounding areas. An ANI report states that built by the Tata company, the tower has a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters per second. Forty fans are fitted to provide a design airflow rate of 1000 m3/sec.
The filtration system being used in the smog tower has reportedly been designed by the University of Minnesota with a potential efficiency of 90 percent. A tower with a height of more than 20 meters is of downdraft type in which pollution or particulate matter enters from the top of the tower and clean air emerges from the bottom.
On Tuesday, the government also launched PRANA, a portal to track the progress of the National Clean Air Programme, with Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav saying the country is committed to ensuring clean air and blue skies for everyone.
During the launch event organized at the ministry headquarters here on the occasion of ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Sky’, Yadav said it is an experimental technology and its impact will be seen for two years. “India is committed to ensure clean air and blue skies for all the people of the country, assuring them of a healthy and productive life,” Yadav said during the event.

The Union Minister said that in 2018, only six out of 132 cities had particulate matter (PM) concentrations below the national ambient air quality standards, which increased to 11 cities in 2019 and 28 in 2020, with 86 cities performing well. has done. The tower, proposed by IIT Bombay, is of downdraft (polluted air comes from the top of the tower and clean air comes from below) for local reduction of PM2.5 and PM10.
An advisory committee headed by CPCB Chairman, and comprising experts from IITs, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Engineers India Limited (EIL), NTPC Limited and NBCC India Limited.
