Pakistani MP draws parallels between India’s moon landing and Karachi’s tragic reality, highlighting lack of fresh water and education

A Pakistani lawmaker on Wednesday drew a scathing contrast between the education systems of Pakistan and India during a speech at the country’s parliament, a video of which went viral on the internet.

Drawing a comparison between the two countries, Syed Mustafa Kamal, during a National Assembly address, said, “The condition in Karachi is today such that, while the world is going to the moon, our children are dying by falling into a gutter in Karachi.” “30 years ago, our neighbouring India taught (its children) what is now in demand around the world. Today Indians are CEOs of the top 25 companies.”

‘India is Booming’

“Today, if India is booming, it is because they taught what was needed to be taught. Our IT exports are ‘7 Arab dollars’, while India’s IT exports are ‘270 Arab dollars’,” the MQM-P leader added. During his speech, the Pakistani MP also highlighted there over two crore children in Pakistan are not able to go to school.

“We have a total of 48,000 schools, but a new report says that out of that 11,000 are ‘ghost schools’. 70 lakh children in Sindh don’t go to school and a total of 2,62,00,000 children in the country don’t go to school. If we just focus on this, the leaders of the country shouldn’t even get any sleep,” the Pakistani MP added.

Social Media Reaction

After the Pak lawmaker’s video went viral on X there was a lot of chatter on Indian social media about the comparison made by the MQM-P. “Pakistan should start comparing itself with Afghanistan or Bangladesh, that will hopefully be a feel-good factor for its sulking politicians. No point in comparing apples to oranges. #India is now in another orbit,” said one of the users on the microblogging website X.

“What is blocking Pakistan’s development is their religion. Once they become secular, they can progress,” wrote another. Yet another said, ‘If enough people in Pakistan want it, change is possible. If and ONLY if. Can they get rid of the Army’s supremacy mixed with lawless terror organizations? It’s going to need generational change and aspirations. Right now it’s turning into Afghanistan.” “Think Pakistan shouldn’t matter anymore. Whether it’s praise or criticism…that beggar nation must cease to be exist in our discourse…social media or otherwise.”
