Indian student injured in Kyiv discharged from hospital, seeks help from government for further treatment

Harjot Singh, who was killed multiple times while fleeing the war-torn country last month in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, has been discharged from an army hospital here. Singh said his condition had improved, but he would need further treatment as the range of motion of his right arm and both legs has been reduced. He sought the help of the Center for his treatment.

He said doctors have told him that it will take him more than a year to fully recover. 31-year-old Singh, who was shot down four times in Kyiv on February 27, returned to India on March 7 on a special flight of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The Ministry of External Affairs announced last month that the government would bear his medical expenses. Singh said the doctors have informed him that he will have to bear the expenses later.

“Doctors have informed me that I need daily medical attention as there is no movement in my right arm and leg as the nerves have been damaged by the bullets. Also, I need more treatment to recover,” he said. “My financial condition is not good. I took a loan before moving to Ukraine. And now there is the cost of treatment. I urge the government to help me,” he added.

Singh is enrolled in a language course at the International European University in Kyiv. He said that he has not received any letter from the university.

“At present, my priority is recovery,” he said. Singh’s brother Prabhjot also urged the government to help him get more treatment.

“Our financial position is not very good. We request the Government of India to help us in my brother’s further treatment.”
