The Indian Railways (IR) on Wednesday said it envisions to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

According to the Railway Ministry statement, about 142 megawatt (MW) solar plants (both on rooftops and on vacant land) and about 103 MW wind power plants have been commissioned by October 31, 2022.

It said it has also tested the use of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) based 3-phase propulsion system with regenerative braking in locomotives, Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains, Kolkata Metro rakes and Electric Trains. began. set.

Among the measures, conversion of generation trains to head-on-generation trains to reduce noise, air pollution and diesel consumption, light-emitting diode (LED) lighting in all railway establishments including railway stations, service buildings, residential quarters Coaches were also included for provision of AC and reduction in power consumption. Afforestation was also started on railway land to increase the carbon sink from the railway side.

Other measures include green certification of various industrial units, railway stations and other railway establishments. Along with these, the construction of Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) and setting up of waste-to-energy plants have been started.

The statement also said that IR has decided to progressively procure renewable energy to reduce energy consumption through conventional sources.
