Pioneering Indian woman climber, who was left alone below the summit, remained out of radio contact till this morning

Prominent Indian female climber Baljit Kaur, 27, was found alive on Tuesday, a day after she went missing near Camp IV of Mount Annapurna, an official of the expedition organizer said.

The Himalayan Times newspaper reported an aerial search team based in Kaur climbed the world’s 10th highest peak without using supplemental oxygen on Monday above Camp IV, president of Pioneer Adventure Pasang Sherpa.

“We are preparing a long rescue line to airlift him over the high camp,” he said.

According to the Sherpas, an aerial search party saw Kaur descending alone towards Camp IV.

The pioneer Indian woman climber, who was left alone below the summit point, remained out of radio contact till this morning, reports said.

An aerial search operation was launched on Tuesday morning after she managed to send a radio signal for ‘urgent help’.

According to the Sherpas, their GPS location indicated an altitude of 7,375 m (24,193 ft). She climbed Mount Annapurna with two Sherpa guides at around 5.15 pm on Monday. At least three helicopters were pressed into service to locate him.

In May last year, Kaur from Himachal Pradesh scaled Mount Lhotse and became the first Indian mountaineer to scale four 8000-metre peaks in a single season.

Anurag Malu, a resident of Kishangarh in Rajasthan, went missing on Monday while descending from the third camp of Annapurna mountain.

Later, it was found that Malu had died on Monday after falling into a 6,000-metre crevasse while descending from Camp IV, The Himalayan Times newspaper reported.

Noel Hannah, the first person from Ireland to summit K2 in the winter season, breathed his last at Camp IV last night, according to Mingma Sherpa, president of Seven Summits Treks. Organizers said efforts were on to bring their bodies back to the base camp.

Annapurna is the tenth highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,091 meters above sea level.

It is well known for the difficulty and danger involved in its ascent.
