India vs South Africa 2021-22: Out or Not Out? Mayank Agarwal DRS review left fans polarized

Fans were shocked by the dismissal of Mayank Agarwal during the first Test against South Africa. India were firing great guns when Lungi Ngidi made a class delivery that crashed on their pads. South Africa were convinced the ball had hit the off-stump, but DRS showed otherwise. Many fans were of the view that it would not have hit his off-stump and the umpire’s call should have been considered in the matter.

The batsman jumped while playing the shot, and as the DRS showed it must have gone past his off-stump. However, he was ordered to march as the on-field umpire’s decision to ‘not out’ was reversed, leaving the batsman unhappy.

Cheteshwar Pujara was the next man, but he was dismissed on the first ball for India. It was an insult to injury as fans thought Agarwal was not out. India were 117/0 when he got out and quickly lost Pujara as well. Thankfully, India came back well with KL Rahul’s half-century and skipper Virat Kohli looking good too. He was 157/2 when the tea break was taken.

South Africa came back in the afternoon session with two wickets through Lungi Ngidi but India controlled the proceedings at 157 for two at tea on the first day of the first Test here on Sunday. India scored 74 runs in the second session, while Ngidi gave the hosts much-needed success with successive deliveries of Mayank Agarwal (60 off 123) and Cheteshwar Pujara (0).

KL Rahul grew in confidence and was batting on 68 off 166 balls at the break with skipper Virat Kohli (19 off 54). After struggling to hit at full length in the morning, the South African pacers bowled with more consistency and attacked the stumps. Agarwal, who completed his half-century after lunch, was out at the end of the game. The ball appeared to bounce over the wicket apart from missing the leg-stump, but the on-field decision was reversed when the DRS revealed that it was hitting the wickets, which did not believe Agarwal.

Their fall also ended a memorable 117-run partnership, making Rahul and Agarwal only the third Indian opening pair to score centuries in 21 matches in South Africa. With the sun out, Pujara went inside and was out on the first ball, hitting Keegan Pietersen at short leg with a defensive shot. Soon after, Rahul completed his fifty with a brilliant cover drive off Ngidi.
