The first Test match between India and England ended in a draw, rain wreaked havoc and the last day of the match was lost due to rain. India finished the fourth day at 52/1, needing 157 more runs to win the match. Given the situation, Virat Kohli & Co could have been expected to chase down the target, but it did not happen.

Kohli looked disheartened after missing out on his chance to take the lead in the series. “We were expecting rain on the third and fourth day, but it rained on the fifth day. It would have been nice to play and watch, but it’s a shame. That’s exactly what we wanted to do; start strong. On the fifth day we knew we had our chances. We definitely felt we were on top of the game.”

Kohli also lauded the efforts of the tail batsmen to help India reach a good total in the first innings.

“Getting that lead was important, but it’s a shame that we couldn’t complete the fifth day. Getting to fifty overnight was important. We didn’t want to play just for survival. Our intentions kept us ahead. Our It’s a tough three weeks for the bowlers with the bat. We were talking 40-odd lead but we ended up with 95 and those runs were gold dust. Most likely this is our blueprint in this series But adaptability has been our strength.

“One needs to look at the conditions and the pace on the wicket, but this team will be our blueprint. England and India have always been blockbusters and look forward to the next Test.”

Meanwhile, the bowlers put up a stellar performance in the match, with Jasprit Bumrah making a comeback with nine wickets. Now the onus is on the batsmen to do well as they failed in the first innings.
