India Vs Corona 3.0 E-Conclave: Restraint and the Most Powerful Weapon Against Vaccine Variants

New Delhi: ABP News on Thursday spoke to Dr Arvind Kumar, a renowned Chest Surgeon at Medanta Multi-Specialty Hospital, Gurgaon, on the current scenario of the pandemic and a possible third COVID wave, and limits the transmission of the infection, if any.

Speaking on the dismal situation that the doctor fraternity and the country is facing since last 12 to 18 months, Dr Arvind said, “We as a country want to completely erase the bitter memory of this pandemic era”.

Speaking on the preparedness, Dr Arvind said, “Last year the timely lockdown and additional precautions curbed the severity of COVID-19. The government has taken a historic step by implementing the timely lockdown in the country. However, we lack preparedness to fight the second wave this year. And our poor preparation before the second COVID wave caused us massive loss of life in the country,” he said.

Speaking on the severity of the covid variants caused by the continuous mutation of the virus, the chest specialist said, “We cannot tell how severe the third wave may be as the novel coronavirus erupts in a new form changing its behavior every time So there are two things that can help us to check the severity of the third wave: First, people should follow the proper behavior of Covid religiously including wearing masks, maintaining social distance, gathering as a crowd These include a four-step protocol of non-compliance. Place and frequent hand-washing. Secondly, it is the duty of our scientific communities and various medical research bodies like ICMR and CSIR to conduct real-time monitoring of the virus and share new scientific information. Share with the public as this will help us strategically prepare for and plan response to new forms of the virus. Also, Covid containment and vaccine jabs are the most powerful weapons we may have to fight the virus again,” says lung specialist he said.

Is Covaxin effective on Delta, Delta Plus and other variants?

To this, Dr. said, “The final answer on this has just come from experts because it is a topic of research.” Referring to the recent US Health Research Institute report, it has been said that, Covaxin Delta. And on Delta Plus, he said, “Indeed, the vaccine is effective and reduces the severity of the virus, and reduces mortality, however, only research will tell if the vaccine is 100% effective.” But based on the vaccine’s available date, it is effective and every single person in the country should get its dose.”

Not taking the vaccine jabs available in the country and waiting for foreign vaccines is a sheer act of unwise. This act exposes only one to coronavirus. He said, “My clear suggestion to the people is that, vaccines like Covishield, Covaxin, and Sputnik V are effective and safe with good efficacy. So I request everyone to take any of these vaccines in your vicinity. Get it. You can get the foreign vaccine later. When it arrives in the country as a booster dose, but don’t leave the available vaccines waiting for overseas jobs.”

Finally the Chest Surgeon said, “We should not consider COVID as the last virus that attacked humanity, we have seen SARS, MERS and Ebola in the past and there is a possibility of new viruses in the coming times as well. Accordingly, We need to step up our health. To protect our people from severe COVID forms and other new viruses come prematurely and protect the new generation.”
