The left-handed batsman who suffered a hairline fracture in the Delhi Test last week will require a rehabilitation period to recover, reports Cricket Australia (CA).

Warner was ruled out of the Delhi Test after being hit by Mohammed Siraj on the helmet grill in Australia’s first innings. He was later replaced as a concussion substitute by Matthew Renshaw, who was initially dropped from the playing XI.

The blow came soon after hitting his elbow, with X-rays confirming that Warner had also suffered a hairline fracture. On Tuesday, Cricket Australia confirmed that Warner would return home and take no further part in the series.

“David Warner has been ruled out of the Qantas Test tour of India and will return home,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

“Warner suffered an elbow injury in the second Test in Delhi and suffered a hairline fracture. Following further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation, which will prevent any participation in the remainder of the Test series,” the statement further read.

However, CA is optimistic about Warner’s return for the ODI series that is to be held after the conclusion of the Tests in March.

“It is currently anticipated that he will return to India for the three One Day Internationals that will follow the Test series,” the CA statement concluded.

Australia are already grappling with some major injury concerns at the moment. On Monday, the team lost Josh Hazlewood for the rest of the Test series with Achilles soreness. Meanwhile, players like Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc are battling finger injuries.
