India vs Australia 3rd Test: Matthew Hayden Lashes Out At Rohit Sharma’s ‘Lazy’ Batting In Indore

Last Update: March 02, 2023, 18:28 IST

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma got off to a brilliant start by hitting three fours on the first day of the second Test against Australia. However, Rohit’s aggressive approach backfired as he was dismissed for 12 by spinner Matthew Kuhnmann. Coming down the pitch, Rohit failed to read the turn and wicketkeeper Alex Carey made no mistake in taking the wickets in time. After his dismissal, Rohit’s batting style came under severe criticism and former Australian batsman Matthew Hayden also India Captain. Cricketer-turned-commentator Kohli lashed out at Rohit during the innings break at Holkar on Wednesday Cricket Stadium Indore.

“I think there have been some forgettable shots, no doubt about that. Rohit Sharma – and I’ve always said this about Test match cricket – the captain leads from the front. So that dismissal is something he will look back on And will think – maybe I was a bit lazy, maybe I was a bit apprehensive,” Matthew Hayden told broadcaster Star Sports.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also expressed a similar opinion. Manjrekar felt that Rohit Sharma went into the third Test with a ‘hangover’ from India’s previous two wins against Australia. “So, it was Rohit Sharma who came out with a hangover of dominance from the first two Tests. He didn’t start from the first ball. There was a bit of arrogance there,” the 57-year-old said.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss in the third Test and decided to bat first. However, the decision only backfired. Rohit was the first player to return to the dressing room after scoring just 12 runs. The 35-year-old appeared to be out twice in the first over of the third Test but umpire Nitin Menon stood firm on both the occasions.

The departure of Rohit Sharma marked a shocking collapse on the first day of the third Test. The hosts were bundled out for just 109 as Australia’s spinners dominated the opening day. Matthew Kuhnmann, in his second Test match, recorded his first international five-wicket haul to gain the upper hand for the Australians. Kuhnman recorded career-best figures of 5–16 in the first innings. Nathan Lyon, on the other hand, took three wickets.

In response, Australia’s first innings was reduced to 197 runs. Star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets.
