India to Face Top Teams on Slow Pitches: Team Management’s Request to BCCI for World Cup – Report

50-over World Cup 2023 is a few months away and for the Board of Control Cricket The (BCCI) in India is taking every measure to ensure the smooth conduct of the showpiece event. The country is going to host an ICC event after seven years and all the host venues will be given a facelift before the start of the tournament. The fixture will also be introduced after the ongoing IPL 2023.

Meanwhile, The Indian Express has reported that the BCCI is going to consult the Indian team management to know their preferences for matches to be played in the World Cup. It is also learned that the team has requested the board that matches against Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa be held at spinner-friendly venues.

It is to be noted that only a few months ago, Indian pitches were the biggest talking point in the Australian media during the 4-match Test series. The report added that the team management has said that it prefers slower pitches as it wants to maximize the ‘so-called home advantage’.

“The Indian team has done well on slow pitches at home over the years. Therefore, the team management had requested that whenever the schedule is being prepared, the Indian team should face the top teams on slow pitches. They wanted to take home advantage.

The report further added that the state associations have already filed nominations to host the Games in the World Cup and a final decision on the allocation of venues will be taken later. However, there is a strong possibility that India’s match against Australia will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Earlier, the BCCI had allocated over Rs 500 crore to upgrade stadiums across the country for the World Cup. Following criticism over the condition of the ground during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said that the BCCI would upgrade the infrastructure with clean toilets, easy access and clean seats.

“All existing infrastructure in the country will be upgraded before the World Cup. The stadium has been assessed to connect with a wider set of fans during the IPL and World Cup. So the infrastructure will be upgraded during this period,” Shah had said.
