‘India should win the five-Test series against England brilliantly’

Despite England’s strong comeback in the drawn first Test in Nottingham, West Indies legend Michael Holding has made India strong favorites to win the five-match series. After bowling out England for a low score, India took a crucial first innings lead before Joe Root’s century brought the hosts back into the competition at Trent Bridge.

England have been struggling with their batting for some time now and the absence of all-rounder Ben Stokes has left them vulnerable for the series. Experts believe that this is India’s best chance to end three consecutive series defeats in England.

“India started the series as favourites, and they remained favourites. India should win the series in a great way,” Holding told Mid-Day. I don’t see any reason why India can’t win the series. They have already adapted to the circumstances. They should focus on playing without worrying about the outcome. They have a balanced side of young and experienced cricketers.”

India have a strong batting line-up under skipper Virat Kohli, with Holding also praising their bowling attack, especially the fast bowlers who are expected to play a major role in the series result.

India are looking good with Jasprit Bumrah returning to form. Shardul Thakur, Mohd Siraj look promising. Mohammed Shami is a seasoned campaigner. I am sure the Indian fast bowlers will be able to utilize the conditions in England well.

He said that a weak batting line-up could be the reason for England’s defeat. He said, ‘The ball will swing here and make lateral movement. Batsmen have to be careful. England’s batting is not strong. They don’t have good batting depth. And that could cost them the series,” he said.

While Joe Root has a world-class thick bowling attack, Holding warned that he is too dependent on 39-year-old James Anderson, who should not be expected to do the job alone.

“England are now trying to stop India from scoring big. Indian batting power is better than England. So, Virat Kohli and his men have an edge here as well. Anderson is trying but how can one or two bowlers stop a team like India? Holding said.

The second Test starts on Thursday at Lord’s.
