India reports 6,317 fresh Covid-19 cases, active caseload reaches 78,190

New Delhi: India reported 6,317 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload to 78,190. In the last 24 hours, 318 deaths were recorded with 6,906 recoveries. The number of Omicrons in the country has reached 213.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the active caseload is the lowest in 575 days. The recovery rate currently stands at 98.4 percent, which is the highest since March 2020. The daily positivity rate is 0.51 percent, and the mortality rate is 1.38 percent.

Active cases accounted for 0.22 per cent, the lowest since March 2020. The COVID-19 data is important as one has to keep an eye on the rising omicron cases in the country. Currently, 213 omicron cases have been confirmed in the country, of which 90 have been discharged so far.

While there have been no deaths due to omicrons in India so far, governments have begun preparations to fight a possible third wave if the Covid-19 cases spiral out of proportion.

As the Omicron tally crossed the 200-mark on Tuesday, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan issued a letter to the states suggesting measures that should be taken by them in the light of the Omicron spread scenario.

The letter suggested that containment zones, night curfew, and other restrictions, testing and surveillance, clinical management such as bed reservation and oxygen availability, increase the pace of vaccination, and appropriate handling of COVID community engagement.

The Omicron variant is said to be three times more transmissible than the Delta variant. Delta and the presence of both omicron The variant could lead to a third wave in the country.
