India records 8,895 fresh Covid-19 cases with 2,796 deaths and 6,918 recoveries

New Delhi: India has reported 8,895 fresh Covid-19 cases with 2,796 deaths in the last 24 hours. The active caseload is 99,155. The death toll is higher as the reconciled deaths of 2,426 people from Bihar have been adjusted for today’s figures. And this includes Kerala’s backlog of 263 deaths, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare explained. The recoveries recorded in the last 24 hours were 6,918.

Meanwhile, four Omicron positive cases have been confirmed in India from Karnataka, Mumbai and Gujarat. The patients have been isolated and their primary and secondary contacts are being traced and tested. The results of all suspected patients have been sent for genome sequencing and their results are awaited.

Amid concerns over the omicron spreading in the country, several experts have claimed that the virus is only more transmitted, but no death has been reported due to the new variant.

Omicron was first detected in South Africa on 25 November. After that, it was declared a “type of concern” by the World Health Organization. Later, more countries began reporting cases of the new variant. So far 38 countries have reported cases of Omicron including India.

While WHO has already warned about high transmission of the variant, the effect on vaccine efficacy is not yet known. The WHO has said that it may take some more time to identify and study its effect.
