‘Dangerous phase’ of pandemic, says WHO chief
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that the world is in a “very dangerous phase” of the COVID-19 pandemic after the infectious delta variant was found in nearly 100 countries.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a press briefing that the India-born delta variant is still evolving and is emerging as the most prominent variant of the coronavirus found in various countries.
Suggesting that vaccination would effectively end the acute phase of the pandemic, the WHO chief said, “I have already urged leaders around the world to ensure that by this time next year, every country has 70 percent of the people should be vaccinated.”
“It is within the collective power of a few countries to share vaccines and ensure that more than 3 billion doses of the vaccine have already been distributed globally,” Tedros said.
