Global life expectancy at birth reached 72.8 years in 2019, an improvement of nearly 9 years since 1990. A further reduction in mortality is projected to result in an average global longevity of approximately 77.2 years in 2050.

Yet in 2021, the life expectancy of the least developed countries fell 7 years behind the global average. Alternative long-term population estimates have also been made by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

In its most recent projections, the IHME projected the global population to reach 11.8 billion from 8.8 billion in 2100 to 6.8 billion.
