New Delhi: India is among the countries that are interested in hosting the Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 and beyond. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bacho Said.
The IOC recently announced that the city of Brisbane will be in 2032. will host summer sports.
Even after Brisbane, Australia was selected to host the 2032 Summer Games last month, the IOC enjoys a line-up of contenders to host olympics 2036, 2040 and beyond, Bach said in a report in the ‘Wall Street Journal’.
The report said that the interested hosts include Indonesia, India, Germany and Qatar.
“And that’s what comes to my mind. So we’re in a really good long-term position,” Bach was quoted as saying by WSJ.
Bach’s remarks come at a time when the rising cost of staging games, running into the millions of dollars, has sparked debate. The recently held Tokyo Games also faced opposition from the amount spent on hosting the Olympics.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajeev Mehta confirmed to PTI that they have indeed shown interest in hosting the showpiece event.
“Earlier in the IOC Commission meeting via video conference” Tokyo OlympicsThe IOA had expressed interest in hosting the Olympics in 2036 and onwards,” Mehta said.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said in March this year that he would do everything possible and upgrade the infrastructure to successfully bid for the 2048 Games on completion of 100 years of independence.
India had also shown interest in hosting the 2032 Olympics as part of a long-term hosting strategy that also included the 2030 Asian Games and the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The 2030 and 2034 Asian Games were awarded to Qatar and Riyadh respectively in December.
